The new 2019/2020 Queen’s Commerce Application 👀

For the first time in over 10 years, Queen's Commerce has changed their application process for the 2019/2020 season. Here is everything you need to know.

Every year, over 7000 grade twelve students apply to the Bachelor of Commerce program at Queen’s University. For the last 8+ years, the application method has remained the same:

Step 1: Uphold the Academic Requirements.

  • Minimum 80% grade in Grade 12 English (ENG4U)
  • Minimum 80% grade in Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U)
  • Minimum 80% grade in one other 4U math course (Either Advanced Functions or Data Management).
  • Minimum 87% overall average of top 6 courses (inclusive of the above mentioned courses)

Step 2: Complete the Personal Statement of Experience Essay and Lists (PSE).

‍Note: This essay has remained the same over the last 8 years.

Choose one extracurricular activity or one employment opportunity you have listed on your Personal Statement of Experience. In 300 words, or fewer, describe the impact of this experience and the greatest learning outcome for you. Your answer will be evaluated for content and writing style.

Step 3: Complete two Supplementary Commerce Essays.

Note: These essays change year-to-year.

Step 4: Submit your essays on SOLUS (The Queen’s portal you gain access to after applying) by the deadline.

‍Note: This deadline is typically within the first two weeks of February.

What does this mean?

You can start your PSE Essay/Lists anytime. Commerce essays are released on SOLUS in November, and the entire application is due in February. That gives students over 3 entire months to write three 300 word essays with hopes of standing out.

‍

This year, everything is changing.

‍

Well, not everything… The academic requirements remain the same (however we suggest aiming for an 88-90% average).

Once you meet the academic requirements, your application is reviewed exclusively based on your essay responses.

The essay process, arguably the most important section of the Queen’s Commerce application, is changing.

Ready for this?

Rather than Queen’s releasing 2 Commerce essays in November to be due in February, this year Queen’s will change the essay questions twice: once at the beginning of December, and again at the beginning of January.

What does this mean?

If you opt to answer the November questions, you SHOULD submit your entire application (PSE and Commerce Supplementary Essays) by November 30th. NOTE: This is recommended by the Queen’s Registrar’s Admissions Office.

If you do not answer the November essay questions, SOLUS will release two new questions on December 1st. If you choose to answer these questions, your application will be due by December 31st.

If you choose not to complete the December questions, January 1st will bring you two new questions. Of course, they will be due January 31st.

‍So… what does this mean for you?

If November is a busy time or you don’t like the questions, students can opt to wait until the new essay questions are released in December or January. But, the PSE portion of the application never changes so you can begin working on this anytime, despite which commerce essays you choose to answer.

Let’s make this is crystal clear:

You need to complete TWO supplementary commerce essays. Not all 6.

You still need to complete the standard PSE essay question, along with the three lists regarding extra-curriculars, awards/distinctions, and paid/unpaid work.

“What am I doing again?”

In total, you will submit 1 PSE essay, 2 Commerce Essays, and 3 PSE Lists. Our team at Alpha knows exactly how to structure your essay responses, differentiate your application from the mass of other applicants, and get you the acceptance to the school of your dreams… stress free.
